FAQs  Questions

Q: What are BioCelTM and EnviroCelTM?
A: These are high-performance polyurethane backing systems constructed with environmentally friendly components that provide an alternative to traditional carpet backing systems.

Q: What are bio-based polymers and CelceramTM?
A: CelceramTM is a byproduct of coal combustion in an electrical utility power plant. It is carefully selected and processed for its component & performance characteristics. Bio-based polymers are polyurethane polymers that are manufactured with a portion of the polyol coming from natural oils, a renewable resource.

Q: How are CelceramTM and bio-based polymers used in the manufacturing of high-performance polyurethane carpet backings?
A: CelceramTM is a recovered green component that stabilizes and toughens the polyurethane compound utilizing consistent and chemical properties. Bio-based polymers are a renewable resource used as traditional polyurethane polymers to manufacture polyurethane carpet backings for the commercial carpet market.

Q: Why would I want to include your products in my specification?
A: Universal Textile Technologies polyurethane provides a high performance "green" product for improved sustainability in the carpet industry.

Q: Who, in addition to carpet mills, can benefit from this technology?
A: Using BioCelTM and EnviroCelTM can assist the U.S. economy and help support the agricultural community. We can lessen the amount of petroleum imported, improve air quality, reduce landfill issues and limit the environmental footprint on our planet.

Q: Which mills offer BioCelTM and EnviroCelTM?
A: Any carpet mill marketing a polyurethane carpet backing processed with Universal Textile Technologies has access to our products.

Q: Does adding BioCelTM or EnviroCelTM impact the performance of the backing?
A: No. The attributes long associated with polyurethane backings remain intact and in some areas improve.

Q: Will this product look different?
A: Polyurethane backing systems with UTT's grey non-woven will perhaps see a slight change in the grey compound.

Q: Does adding one of your carpet backing systems earn me additional LEED points?
A: Yes. Specifying carpet with BioCelTM or EnviroCelTM contributes to the total building materials requirement for rapidly renewable materials under the Materials and Resources Section of Version 2.0 of the LEED guidelines.

Q: Can your products be specified for GSA usage?
A: Yes. Our floor covering products can be submitted for GSA. Additional information may be obtained from UTT, the GSA or the Farm Bill.

Q: Are any recycled materials used in the production of polyurethane carpet backings?
A: Universal Textile Technology currently integrates a percentage of post-industrial recycled polyurethane into the pre-coat polymer of all polyurethane backings they manufacture. In addition, UTT offers a 100% post-consumer, recycled PET, non-woven secondary backing.

Q: How does the addition of BioCelTM or EnviroCelTM and the non-woven secondary backing impact the sustainability profile of the backing
A: With the addition of BioCelTM or EnviroCelTM and the post-consumer non-woven secondary backing, UTT's high-performance polyurethane backing products offer significant percentages of recycled and sustainable components. The backing weight is a composite of sustainable bio-based materials, post-consumer materials (non-woven secondary), recovered materials ( CelceramTM), and post-industrial materials.

Q: Did the cost of the backing systems increase in price as a result of this technology?
A: No. Our products maintain or increase their high-performance attributes and are more environmentally sensitive, with no increase in price.

Q: Whom should I contact for additional information?
A: Contact Universal Textile Technologies at 706-876-5604 or ask your local mill representative.
